Homework for Week 8

Hi guys.

So I'm hearing that people aren't clear about the homework that is due.

What you need to bring in are:

-***3 thumbnail sketches of your first key scene of choice. (picked from you color script) with a color rough for each thumbnail (which can be just as rough as your color scripts)
-Finished 50 Pause and Paints.
-Next 7 frames of your Color Script
- Keep fixing Characters/Color Scripts

If you are behind try to catch up as fast as you can.
We are getting into Key Scenes now and it'll be hard to catch up if you fall behind at this point.
Think ahead on which 4 Key Scenes you want to paint.

Painting demo files

Hi guys!

I apologize for the delay on posts and emails as of late. Will do the best we can to keep up with the weeks while graduation is around the corner and thanks to everyone for the constant improvement and bringing in great work every week.

As a reminder we're doing one on ones this coming Wednesday so bring in your homework, your new assignments (new characters/color scripts/keyscene thumbnails), and any other work from or outside of class that you would like to show. If you have an idea of where or what you would like to gear your work towards let us know.

By the way, this is a painting from Dice Tsutsumi. Each version was made different through the use of different adjustment tools and filters (taking advantage and painting with the mask).  The painting was first finished as a diffused light painting (think cloudy day) before he applies those special layers.

Week 5: Color Script

COLOR SCRIPT!!!

Hi Everyone! I have to apologize for the tardiness of this post.
With graduation drawing closer things are getting hectic, but the homework posts must come up as promised.

Just keep in mind that for the next couple of weeks you are require to do 7 frames of color scripts each week. There is no need to make them finely detailed miniature illustrations. Treat them like you have been for you Pause and Paints.

So just keep in mind:
-7 frames (they do not have to be done in order)
-create composed compositional frame
-indicate color and light into each frame.
-when all 28 frames are put together after the next four weeks they SHOULD look as if they flow together.
-You can if you like, but there is no need to over work your color script.

The best example I can find in the level of detail with the clear indication of color  and light are Loud Romano's color scripts below.

(This one is VERY detailed so this level of finish isn't required, but it still gives a clear impact with color and light.)

Week 4: Silumtaneous Contrast || Story Palette

Homework #1: Simultaneous Contrast

The purpose of this assignment is for you to understand how to:

-change the appearance hue

-change the appearance of color saturation

-create the impression two hues appear as the same hue.

Follow the format of the images below.

1. Create 4 different color bases to lay your colored line on top.

2. You are not changing the color of the line on the four squares, but make the line look like different saturation and hues in the different color zones.

3. Create 4 squares on each of the corners. Make sure each pair look like they are the same square, but when putting the two squares next to each other they are actually different hues.

I advise making each of the squares their own individual layer including the line work. Then change the colors using the Hue/Sat Adjustment on the layer you wish to adjust.

*No color-picking from the examples.

Homework #2: Story Palettes

 Each Palette Sheet needs to include: 

• Your reference images 

• Verbal call outs concerning how the 

costume or setting will be used. 

• The visual problem you are addressing. 

• Three palettes, with proportional 

considerations.

You are required to create three (or more) color palettes each for three settings and three characters.

As a result you should have minimum 18 color palettes total.

Include text on why you made those color choices for each setting and character.

Homework #3: Characters

-Bring in sketches of your next two characters next week.

- Continue with advancements of your characters from this week as well if we asked for changes and bring them next week.

-If you haven't done the Beast then make sure that you create interaction sketches of Beauty with the Beast to make sure they work together. The same goes for any new character you make (Sisters/Father/Fairy/ etc).

-Choose Characters you know will make it into your key scenes later.

Week 3: (Part IV) Extra Character Resources

Celine had already posted a hell of a lot of resources to you guys! So I'm just going to add the video resources and a few links to some of the images she posted and extras.

Look through your Tuesday Tips book before your start your characters!
Quick reminders (these are pulled out of last class for students).
Straight vs Curve / Complex vs Simple / Big. Medium. Small
Balance your characters with their CENTER OF GRAVITY.

Always establish your LINE OF ACTION

Whether you're designing live action or animated characters you must apply these basics at all times.
Try thinking of which actors and actresses could play the role of your personally designed characters.

These are explorations of Thumbelina and Mr. Toad from Victoria Ying.
Briony Tallis (Actress Saoirse Ronan) from the movie Atonement was the reference for Thumbelina. She was young, naive, perhaps too young to understand aspects of the world, carried a bit of an outrageous imagination which would potentially get her into trouble. She decided to take advantage of her small mouth, short trimmed hair that wraps around her face, and exposing her forehead.

Now the actor Willem Dafoe wasn't referred to because of a specific character he portrayed. He does often play the villain type of character, a bit of a sleazycharacter sometimes, but he does look a bit like a toad doesn't he? The expressions he pulls have such a stretched feature he would work perfectly as Mr. Toad. A bit maniacal. 

The warning for this tip is to make sure you aren't making copies of the actor/actress of reference. Don't just caricaturize the reference, but design it to suit the character that you are designing. Use what is necessary to help flesh out the person you are creating.

Week 3: (Part III) Limited Palette || Mood Boards

Homework #1: Limited Palette

-You are limited to using two colors that are complementary to each other and black and white for shading and tinting.
-It is highly recommended that you use references that are from nature (natural landscapes / animals). You will have more difficulty finding images with manmade subjects that suit this assignment, but it isn't forbidden.
-Have your two complementary colors and it's neutral underneath your image. We should be able to easily relate those colors to your image.

-It is recommended that you use paint/analog, but you may use digital if you'd like.
- Your painting doesn't require itself to be rendered as long as it is an accurate study of your reference image and use those two complementary images.

-It is also highly unlikely that you will be using the saturated/pure color of your chosen complementary hues. The image itself will consist of primarily very neutral colors, often colors have been mixed in with their complementary.

Homework #2: Mood Boards

RESEARCH!!! We are research demons so we expect to see a TON of research next week. Ideally you should be able to fill up two large black foamboards (no you don't need foamboards) or have 15+ tabloid pages FILLED with images and still have more stored in you computer that you couldn't show. Have everything printed by next week!

What you should research:
CULTURE and HISTORY:
Landscape/ Architecture/ Traditional clothing/ Photographs of lifestyles of that culture and time period/ Illustration and Artwork of that culture/ reference actors and actresses/ inspirational paintings and photographs/ Fashion/ Color palettes of that culture

In other words EVERYTHING!

If you have not used Pinterest before I suggest that you do. Researching and looking up/organizing photo will make your life a whole lot easier online.
Do not default to just Google Images. Go through Pinterest, Tumblr, Flickr, etc and you will always find different kinds of images in each search engine.

Researching for your project will create the bones of your images. No research will created a very hard to believe world and characters.

Week 3: Character Design (Part II-Celine)
